The R.E.A.L Dance – ‘Don’t Dance To Impress, Dance To Express’

Events, Interview, News

Sunday June 9th. Wellington’s  The R.E.A.L dance crew are bound to show you something stunning as they host a dance showcase featuring Rosita Vai, JDK, Markie Mark, Aidan Omen Fam, Josh from Hopskotch and more. They’re fundraising to get the team to Brisbane, all 17 of them. Once there, they will compete in the House Of Champions dance competition for the first time.

In the interview with whendidyoufallinlovewithhiphop the crew acknowledge Wellington’s dance scene is known for having a certain vibe that hosts a sense of family, which one gains as their own after a while, it’s this warmth that draws dancers to the windy capital, funnily enough. Crew members – Adelaide and Lana say Wellington’s dance scene is known for being tight-knit and more focused on the love of dance, instead of winning competitions and competing for street credibility. ‘Don’t dance to impress, dance to express’ is a quote R.E.A.L member, Tijana Selak goes by and everyone agrees.

The R.E.A.L was formed in 2011 after SEEK and their brother crew Blueprint held auditions for another competition called Collaboration. Adelaide and Lana also explain in the video below that without the love and commitment shown by Seek founder, Daphne Seyb, and former Legacy member, Patrick Godinet, the Wellington dance family that is now The R.E.A.L just wouldn’t be possible. They also note how blessed they are to be learning under someone like Patrick. For Adelaide, Daphne particularly, has given her and other dancers a chance to have an alternative home to belong to when times in their own lives have been rough – and she’s done it via something they all love to do – dance.

Showcase details are: 7pm at the Whitireia Performance Centre, 25 Vivian Street, Wellington. Adult tickets are $15 and Student (with ID) $10, Children (12 and under) are $5.

Below is part of an interview we did with them during their rehearsal on Thursday night:
