Discover Dzindza: Crossing Cultures in African Jazz by Thabani Gapara

New Zealand-based saxophonist and touring musician Thabani Gapara is celebrating heritage, rhythm, and community with his new album Dzindza — and will perform live at 16th Ave Theatre, Tauranga, on October 10.

Dzindza, which means “ancestry” in Gapara’s native Shona language, pays tribute to his Southern African roots while exploring the global reach of African jazz. The album weaves together Afrobeat, Highlife, Mbaqanga, and Mbira, and has already been described as “a bold statement about the global reach of African jazz today.”

“It’s a heartfelt tribute to my Southern African roots,” Gapara says. “The Bay of Plenty shows are always a good vibe, and Tauranga is a stop I really look forward to when we’re on tour.”

Fresh from a nomination for Best Jazz Album at the 2025 Aotearoa Music Awards, Gapara is no stranger to the stage. He has performed with some of Aotearoa’s biggest names — including Stan Walker, Katchafire, Corrella, The Modern Māori Quartet and House of Shem — as well as headlining major events like Jazz in the Park earlier this year.

Audiences across Aotearoa have already been moved by Dzindza, with Gapara noting that shows so far have felt “powerful,” as audiences “really engage” with his vibrant fusion of African jazz.

With more than two decades of performance experience, Gapara promises that his live shows are “immersive journeys blending rich musical storytelling with infectious grooves and fearless improvisation.”
